ABSORBABLE SUTURE OVERVIEW
Chromic Gut
Chromic gut sutures are absorbable sterile surgical sutures composed of
purified connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of
beef (bovine) intestines. They are packaged in a formulated solution of
isopropanol, water, and triethanolmaine. Chromic Gut is treated with chromic
salt solution. Mild chromic sutures are specially treated for ophthalmic and
cuticular applications.
Plain Gut
Plain gut suture is an absorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of purified
connective tissue (mostly collagen) derived from the serosal layer of beef
(bovine) or sheep (ovine) intestines. They are packaged in a formulated
solution of isopropanol, water, and triethanolmaine.
Visorb™ (Compare to Ethicon's "Vicryl®")
Visorb is a braided coated synthetic absorbable sterile surgical suture
composed of Polyglycolic Acid and is available both dyed and undyed. When dyed,
only FDA-approved color additives such as D&C Violet No. 2 are used. The
undyed suture is milk white in color. The suture is coated with
Polycaprolactone and calcium stearate.
Mono-Dox™ (Compare to Ethicon's "PDS II®")
Polydioxanone (PDO) monofilament synthetic absorbable, sterile surgical suture
is prepared from the polyester, poly(p-dioxanone).
NONABSORBABLE SUTURE OVERVIEW
Monomid™ (Compare to Ethicon's "Ethilon®")
Nylon is a nonabsorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of the long-chain
aliphatic polymers Nylon type 6 or Nylon type 6/6. Monofilament Nylon suture
may be either dyed black (logwood), dyed blue (FD&C Blue No.2) or white
(undyed). Nylon suture is coated with silicone.
Polypro™ (Compare to Ethicon's "Prolene®")
Polypropylene is a monofilament nonabsorbable, sterile surgical suture composed
of a strand of polypropylene, a synthetic linear Polyolefin. Polypropylene
sutures are clear or dyed blue.
Black Braided Natural Silk
Silk is a braided nonabsorbable, sterile surgical suture composed of an organic
protein called fibroin. This protein is derived from the domesticated species
Bombyx mori (B mori) of the family Bombycidae.
